The Saskatoon Valkyries dominated the Manitoba Fearless in their home opener at Griffiths Stadium on Sunday with a 55-0 win.
Valkyries head coach Jeff Yausie said the match-up was important as a chance for the team’s more than 20 new recruits to get their first taste of the Western Women’s Canadian Football League.
“We have a whole lot of new players, so for me it’s exciting to see them experience the game and see how they executed,” Yausie said.
Despite the strong start to the season that could see the Valkyries take home their fourth WWCFL championship, he’s not letting the win go to their heads.
“With so many new players, you’ve just got to focus on yourselves and get better each week,” he said.
One of the stars of the game was Saskatoon running back Julie David. Scoring three touchdowns and running almost 190 yards, David said she’s pumped for 2014.
“I’m extremely excited,” she said.
“You wait all year for football to start so having this first game with this team, it just feels unreal,” David said, adding that she’s already focusing on the next game against the Regina Riot.
“We want to take it one game at a time and we want to improve on every game,” she said.
“This game is behind us, and now we’re looking forward to Regina.”
The Valkyries will take on the Riot at Griffiths Stadium on Saturday at 7 p.m.
