The Saskatoon Valkyries have gone two seasons without losing a game; and on Saturday night they took home their second Western Women’s Canadian Football League Championship.
With a final score of 64-21 the Valkyries finished their season strong against the Lethbridge Steel. Head coach, Jeff Yausie, said he was thrilled with the teams second league win.
“Any season where you win the last game of the year is an awesome season,” said Yausie on the field at Griffiths Stadium, Saturday night.
“We started this process back in February—we practiced in gymnasiums and soccer centres—so at the end of the year when you play as well as we did, it’s pretty rewarding.”
He explained the second win for the Valkyries may send a signal to other teams in the league to improve their game and ramp up recruitment for next year.
“The teams need to recruit more players,” said Yausie. “Unless you have enough players it’s hard to practice properly and practice in an efficient way, so the teams need to grow a little bit in size.”
The Valkyries quarterback Candace Bloomquist threw a combo of sneak and long passes making for a solid offensive game. Yausie said it was the offensive play that pushed the team to victory.
“Our offense played just terrific out there today,” said Yausie. “The offensive line blocked very well and there were huge holes for our running backs, it didn’t matter who we put in there.”
